Why do doctors disagree with chiropractors?

January 13, 20252 min read

Have you ever noticed a bit of tension or disagreement when it comes to…

…TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

…and

…CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

It's a longstanding divide that often leaves patients caught in the middle, unsure of who to trust.

As a chiropractor, I want to shed some light on why these two healthcare fields don't always see eye to eye.

There are a few key reasons for the historic friction between the medical establishment and the chiropractic profession:

Reason #1. Philosophical Differences

Doctors are trained to treat symptoms and diseases primarily through pharmaceutical interventions and surgery.

Chiropractors, on the other hand, focus on addressing the underlying structural and neurological causes of pain and dysfunction through manual adjustments.

Reason #2. Scope Of Practice

Chiropractors are licensed to diagnose, treat, and manage neuromusculoskeletal conditions, while doctors have a much broader scope covering all aspects of medicine.

This can create turf battles over which provider is "qualified" to treat certain conditions.

Reason #3. Lack Of Standardization

Unlike the highly standardized medical education system, chiropractic training and philosophy can vary widely between different schools and individual practitioners.

This makes it harder for doctors to have confidence in the quality and consistency of chiropractic care.

Reason #4. Doubts About Efficacy

Some doctors remain skeptical about the evidence supporting the benefits of chiropractic adjustments, especially for conditions beyond back and neck pain.

They may view it as an "alternative" or an "unproven" approach.

However, the tide is slowly turning as more research demonstrates the value of comprehensive, integrated care that combines the strengths of both traditional and complementary medicine.

Many doctors now recognize chiropractors as valuable partners in providing holistic, patient-centered treatment.

The key is finding a chiropractor you trust who can work collaboratively with your medical team to optimize your health and wellness.
